Isothermal age-hardening behaviour and the associated phase transformation of a quarternary (AgCu)0.43-Au0.54Pd0.03 alloy were investigated to afford basic guidance for the investigation of age-hardenable, dental
casting
high-carat gold alloys which contain palladium by means of hardness test, XRD study. The following results were obtained.

The metastable AuCu¥°' ordered phase with an f.c.t. structure was formed prior to the formation of the AuCu¥°ordered phase with an f.c.t. structure and the Ag-rich ¥á1 phase with an f.c.c. structure by the isothermal ageing of the
alloy
at
250¡350¡É.

The alloy exhibited the different age-hardening behaviour depending on the ageing temperature. The hardness did not increase in the early stage of ageing, and then decreased drastically by lengthy ageing after reaching and maintaining a maximum
value by
ageing at 350¡É. By ageing at 250¡É, the hardness started to increase progressively from the initial stage of ageing. And then teh hardness continued to increase gradually after showing a decrease in hardness.

Hardening at 350¡É was attributed to the formation of the metastable AuCu¥°' ordered phase by a homogeneous mechanism. The initial hardening at lower ageing temperatures was brought about by another phase transformation and the subsequent
hardening
was attributed to the formation of the metastable AuCu¥°' ordered phase.

Overageing with softening occurred following lengthy ageing seemed to be due to the formation of the AuCu¥°ordered phase.
